American jazz drummer and composer Maxwell Lemuel Roach, born January 10, 1924, was a pioneer of bebop, and worked in many other styles of music too. Roach is generally considered one of the most important drummers in history. He worked with many famed jazz musicians, including Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Abbey Lincoln, Dinah Washington, Charles Mingus, Billy Eckstine, Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, Eric Dolphy, and Booker Little. He was inducted into the DownBeat Hall of Fame in 1980 and the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1992. This 4CD collection of original albums on which Max Roach led or co-led, brings together the finest work he ever performed in the company of other jazz greats. Featuring masterful albums Max made with such luminaries as Clifford Brown, Duke Ellington, Hank Mobley, Charles Mingus, Buddy Rich, his wife Abbey Lincoln, and a host of others, this collection includes eight such collaborative records, all digitally remastered for the finest quality.
