Gregory Roarke is a former bounty hunter, Trailblazer, and current agent for the Icarus Group, tasked with locating a suspected teleportation portal on Alainn. The Patth are also searching for the device, and have more resources. Roarke has Selene and her Kadolian sense of smell, but there has been a murder in Bilswift and another one, and the Patth are already on the scene. Tirano, a Kadolian teenaged boy working at one of Bilswifts fish markets, may be connected to both the murders and the Patth and may be the potentially dangerous wild card known as changelings.

However, things take a turn for the worse when a murder occurs in the small town of Bilswift, and another one follows. Additionally, the Patth are already on the scene and have narrowed the search to a heavily forested area in the hills and mountains east of town. The most disturbing discovery is that one of Selene's people, a Kadolian teenaged boy named Tirano, is working at one of Bilswift's fish markets. Tirano may have lost his parents before his proper socialization was completed, and he may be connected to both the murders and the Patth. He could be the potentially dangerous wild card that the Kadolians call changelings.
